Starting Your Own Home Internet Business: What Can You Expect?
If 2010 is the year you launch your own successful home business on the Internet, here’s a great essay you should check out.

It’s by Paul Graham, founder of a venture firm specializing in funding start-up companies. He recently interviewed a number of people who started their own businesses with his company’s funding. The main question he asked them was, “What surprised you?”
The answers make for some really interesting reading for anyone who’s thinking about taking the plunge and starting a home business online. This essay will give you some idea of what you’ll be experiencing in the months ahead. Although your home Internet business may be somewhat smaller than the start-up companies in the article, the challenges and triumphs you’ll face will be the same.
Here’s our favorite quote from the essay, from one of the start-up owners that Graham interviewed:
The emotional ups and downs were the biggest surprise for me. One day, we’d think of ourselves as the next Google and dream of buying islands; the next, we’d be pondering how to let our loved ones know of our utter failure; and on and on.
If you’d like a peek at what your life is going to be like as you start your home business online, read the essay now.

I think 2010 is definitely the year though!
Thanks for sharing that one.
I think it’s true concerning the part about co-founders. Something you should bare in mind, especially if you’re planning to go into business with a close freind — are they business minded?

Hi Steve;
A financial advisor we know, who’s dealt with hundreds of business owners, adds these three points about co-founders/business partners:
1. Choose someone with complementary skills so you can cover a wider range of responsibilities.
2. Make sure both of you keep an eye on the finances, even if one of you is in charge of them. Partners have stolen from partners before.
3. Don’t go into business with someone you haven’t worked with before. Working together is different from friendship.
She suggests having a very open and frank discussion about your attitudes, goals, and working styles very early in the process, and figuring out where you each need to compromise.
Often we forget the little guy, the SMB, in our discussions of the comings and goings of the Internet marketing industry. Sure there are times like this when a report surfaces talking about their issues and concerns but, for the most part, we like to talk about big brands and how they do the Internet marketing thing well or not so well.
