A bounce back is the email equivalent of “Return to Sender: Address Unknown.” If your email bounces back, that means it never appeared in your intended recipient’s inbox.
A bounce back is either a “hard” bounce back or a “soft” bounce back. The difference between a hard and soft bounce is that a hard bounce means the email address is permanently unavailable, and a soft bounce means that it’s temporarily unavailable. Depending on how your recipient’s mail server is configured, you may find out if your bounce back was hard or soft — but there’s no guarantee.
Hard bounce backs are always initiated by a mail server. Some common reasons for a hard bounce back are:
- The email address doesn’t exist
- The domain doesn’t exist
- You have been blocked from sending any email to that mail server (See: Blacklist)
Soft bounce backs can be initiated by either a mail server or an individual. Some common reasons for a soft bounce back are:
- The recipient’s inbox is full (soft bounce from the server)
- The recipient has blocked you or your domain (soft bounce from the individual)
