Traffic is a term you’ll hear a lot in the Internet marketing world… because it’s just so essential to the success of any online business. When we talk about “driving traffic to your site,” we mean taking steps to increase the number of people who visit your site. A highly-trafficked site gets lots of visitors.

Naturally, if you want to maximize your website’s leads and sales, you’ll need lots of traffic. However, not all traffic is equally beneficial. Your traffic-generation strategies should be targeted to people who are actually interested in what your site offers.

The family of strategies used to get more targeted website traffic is called search marketing, which includes:

  • PPC Advertising — the fastest way to drive qualified traffic to your site by buying a top spot in the search engine results for your top keywords
  • Search engine optimization — the things you do to your website to make sure the search engines categorize and rank your site appropriately, so you get maximum traffic through the organic search engines
  • Link-building — strategies that encourage complementary websites to link to yours, so that the search engines rank your site higher because of its popularity

There are lots of other traffic-building strategies as well, including advertising on related websites, giving away free content, and starting an affiliate program.
