Why email marketing works for ANY business

Email marketing is the online entrepreneur’s best friend!

Consider this: About 99% of your website visitors will leave without buying anything from you on their first visit. But by creating a great opt-in offer you can at least get their contact details — and then use email marketing to follow up, build relationships, and turn them into paying customers!

And email is by far the BEST and CHEAPEST way to stay in touch with your customers and build rock-solid relationships with them.

The first thing you’ll have to do is give your visitors a compelling reason to give you their contact details. You could offer a free report, download, newsletter, or whatever will entice YOUR visitors to subscribe to your list.

Then to obtain their report or download, they’ll have to enter their name and email address into a form on your web page, like this:

This enables you to collect their contact details and, by signing up, your subscribers are giving you permission to keep this information and contact them in the future. (We call them subscribers, leads, or opt-ins — all of which are interchangeable.)

Imagine the power of a list of 5,000, 10,000, or 50,000 subscribers — a huge target audience all interested in your industry or area of expertise!

Email marketing can be used for many different purposes. You can use it to send valuable information to subscribers and establish your credibility as an expert in your field. Or you can use it to let your customers know about a special promotion you’re running. In fact, email allows you to manage, automate, and test all your communication with your customers.

Most important, though, email marketing allows you to build trusting relationships with your customers — so they’ll buy from you again and again! (This is called the “lifetime value” of your customers, and it’s extremely profitable!)

Excellent points, Chuck. Have you ever used Google Feedburner’s option to publicize RSS via email, then add those subscribers to your email list? I find that pretty effective myself, on top of using traditional email subscriptions with incentives.

Hi Chuck. I have been reading your concise, yet insightful emails for a while now. Thank you for taking the time to share some of your knowledge and thoughts. I can assure you I now know more about internet marketing than what I did a year ago. Great job mate, keep up the good work.

“About 99% of your website visitors will leave without buying anything from you on their first visit”, is the number really that high? I think that what matters is the relationship with the list, because you build a community of which you are the leader.

To gain huge list in any niches, you need targeted visitors. So you will get higher convertion rate. e.g: Getting 100 targeted visitors is better than the 1000 raw visitors.

I think Chuck needs to review his content before submitting. 2 spelling/grammar errors that stuck out to me:
systemactically should be systematically (in his bio)
    and
convent should be convert (in his text body)

I have used Corey Rudl’s software and books from the beginning.

Email Marketing is definitely well worth the efforts put in. As the outcomes can be amazing for your business, no matter what niche you’re in… It’s been seen so much where people offer a freebie to get people on their list, and the reason it’s seen so often, is quite simply because it works.

    Great post :)

This kind of comment is very useful. I have been thinking for a while about how to set up a mailing list, in particular, which tools to use. I have an ebook to offer, in exchange for people’s email addresses but I’ve no idea how to get the emails into a list. I use WordPress and I figure there must be plenty of free tools out there for people to use but there are so many to choose from…
My site is http://www.businesswhilesleeping.com if anyone can offer a suggestion about how to go about it. It’s a standards sales page so I don’t think a form within the page is a good idea but I’m also unsure if pop-ups are any better, as so many of them are blocked these days.
    Any ideas?

A great article. Any on that is doing Internet marketing, really needs to understand not only how to build a list, but how to market to that list. And you are so right about building a relationship with your list being so important for everyone.

You can have a much smaller list then the next person and make a lot more money if you understand how to market to your list.

There is a reason that the wildly successful Internet Marketers have all said that they power is in the list. You hit the nail on the head Chuck when you wrote about how it allows you to form relationships with your list. People are much more likely to give you there money if they think you are trustworthy. The best way to gain that trustworthy is through all of your valuable emails you send them.

One thing that you didnt mention in your post that I think is hugely important is the abillity to warm people up to a product you are going to release. You can let your list know a few days prior to your release about whats going to be included, what kind of deal they are going to get as list subscribers, how huge the buzz is etc. As you email them over the next few days they are getting warmer and warmer about giving you there money and then when you finally release they are ecstatic about receiving the product they have heard so much buzz about. You are leaving money on the table if you aren’t doing this!

Another valuable part of the list is what you are able to do with it post launch. You can continue to make money days after the launch by telling your list what people have said about it and how much they are enjoying it!

“You can have a much smaller list then the next person and make a lot more money if you understand how to market to your list”<—yep, heard of a guy who made $5000 in 24 hours as an affiliate on 384 clicks. That's a well-marketed list. As far as list-marketing goes, or copywriting in any avenue (because email marketing IS copywriting), building a friendship, beforehand – friendship, in this case, being a sense of friendship – is the way to go. You write, that email, directed at ONE person; and talk like you would talk, had that been you giving tips to your best friend; including everything that would come with that (and please take a moment to ponder what the last sentence really means)

    Great post.

As far as email marketing is concerned, to me the most crucial aspect of it is the sales funnel bit.

Getting traffic & opt-ins are all fine, but if your sales funnel isn’t doing its job, there will be no sales.

Getting a killer sales funnel makes all the difference. And yes, i agree with the above comment…. when you nail that part…. even a small list could be really responsive & profitable.

    Hi Chuck,

99% for ebooks but digital “products” reduce that to around 97% which means hitting that 3%. Also Facebook I find is really working better these days for list building than email and it is cheap and easy to build likes externally, instead of only trying to build your list from your own traffic.

    Cheers.

But non the less, if using a reputable email marketing (ESP) service provider and you add SPF records to your domain, you should have excellent delivery still with email marketing and email still converts high with unique email only offers.

Great Knowledge. I am a big believer in a list. That is the key to any success in my opinion. Getting start the right way can get get confusing at first but once the tech garble is out of the way, its pretty easy to maintain. Heck I got a lot of free training from several programs that were easy to follow and understand. Check it out at http://www.Marketing4Dummiz.info
